About the Recipe

Have you ever played the game pass-the-parcel before? Pass-The-Parcel is a game in which a parcel is passed around while music plays.

When the music stops, the person holding the parcel is allowed to open it to reveal something inside

This version of Pass-The-Parcel uses clothing, accessories and random objects to play a game of dressing-up, imagination and reinvention

Participatory Learning

Speculative Thinking

Critical and Creative Thinking

Learning Goals

Tactile engagement to facilitate thoughtful, critical and creative thinking about alternative and imaginary uses and design.

Examine and re-examine the role design plays in our daily lives.

Nurturing an out-of-this-world & playful approach to wearing, engaging with and using clothing and objects.

Further Explanation

Through playful experimentation, this activity fosters an interdisciplinary critical design approach, encouraging speculative thinking.

It stimulates our imagination as we physically engage with, re-examine and re-design the purpose, design and qualities of the clothing, objects and items of our everyday existence.

Ingredients

A variety of clothing, accessories & random objects (see recipe prep.)

One bag (per group), big enough to fill with the items.

Music.

Optional: Presentation Slides (includes detailed instructions & a summary)

Please note, there are NO other designed resources for this recipe. However, the 'What Can You See in 3D?' recipe can be played as extension of 'Pass-The-Dress-Ups'.

Recipe Prep  & Play-Space Set Up

PLAY-SPACE SET UP

Ensure there is enough space for all players to sit in a circle, either on the floor or in chairs with space in front of you.

RECIPE PREP

You can either play this recipe in one big group OR divide the players into smaller groups of 3-6 people.

You will need to either instruct the players to bring in the items, or you will need to collect and provide them yourself

For example, your bag could include items such as:

Scarves

Skirts

Tops

Jackets

Dresses

Shoes

Trousers

Hats

Jewellery

As well as:

Toys

Kitchen Items

Technology

Art & Craft Items

Packaging

Homewares

Books

Stationery

These are just some ideas – be creative! The more out-of-this-world the better.

Method

LET’S PLAY!

Remember, you’re playing too!

1. Introduce the recipe - see the ‘About’ section.

2. Sit in a circle as a group, including you, the adult.

3. One player needs to be in charge of playing and pausing the music. Although you’re the adult, make sure all players have a turn overseeing the music.

4. Play the music. As the music plays, pass your ‘parcel’ (the bag) around the circle. The person in charge of the music chooses when to randomly pause the music.

5. When the music is paused, the player holding the ‘parcel’ gets to choose an item out of the bag.

6. Once the player has chosen an item from the bag, their task is to reimagine the item’s purpose.

They need to describe to the other players what this new purpose is and act out how it could be worn or used

Let the person who chose the item, try to reimagine and reinvent the item first.

Then you can brainstorm ideas together. Here are some examples:

A fluffy scarf which turns into squishy shoes.

Bottle caps which turn into earrings which translates languages

A strip of velcro which turns into a tool belt to stick items to.

A clutch bag which doubles as an oven glove

7. Once the player has had their turn, start playing the music again, and repeat until everyone has had a turn. You can play for as long as you like!

Let’s keep cooking!

Why don’t you play, ‘What Can You See in 3D?’

Use the ideas you imagined in this recipe, to further develop them in the ‘What Can You See in 3D?’ recipe.
